Article from CHAIN STORE AGE Precrusher System For Waste HandlingCanadian Tire Corp., Canada's largest auto/accessory chain, is installing a new type of precrushing compactor that compacts general store trash and destroys merchandise unfit for resale. The unit (from Glosser, McKeesport, Pa.) will allow the retailer an easy and convenient on-site method to dispose of large, bulky items that require preconditionng, such as steel drums, crates, pallets and discarded fixtures and display cases. Unlike standard precrusher compactors that feature guillotine-styled steel gates, the Glosser precrusher is designed with a stepped press head and reinforced precrushing chamber. (Eliminating the guillotine puts the price of the unit more in line with standard compactors.) The precrushing part of the compaction cycle occurs in the top half of the charging chamber. While the cycle is active, the lower press head compacts the already preconditioned waste into the receiver container. In addition to enhancing its waste reduction efforts, the Glosser system has helped Toronto-based Canadian Tire to reduce its labor and equipment costs. A previous system used by the chain required heavy labor and a second, separate piece of equipment just for product destruction. © Reprinted from CHAIN STORE AGE, October 1997 |
